Principles and Values
Confidential
Every contact the service gets its confidential. To ensure volunteers are supported the contact may be discussed within the service but nothing identifiable will be shared. We do not record calls and the only details we keep about contacts are demographical information
Anonymous
Any student who contacts the service can tell us as little or as much as you like. You don’t have to tell us what university you’re from, what course you are studying or even your name
Non-Advisory
What works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, we don’t give advice because you know your situation best so are best placed to decide what to do. If you want to advise we can however signpost you to another organisation that can help
Non-Directional
we understand that because everyone is different what matters to them will also be different. Therefore, we never tell a caller what they need to talk about its your call, its your time and you choose how you use it.
Non-Judgemental
We understand and respect the fact that everyone makes different choices. We always support callers with what ever they are going through with an open mind and without judgement
Phone
Phone is one of the most common methods of contact. You can phone between 8pm and 8am every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Your call will be answered by one of our trained volunteers who will be in the Nightline office which is a quiet and confidential place.
If you wish to volunteer with us, you can do so by signing up under ‘Listening Volunteers’.
Instant Messenger
Talk to our volunteers in real time on your computer, phone or tablet using our chat app, in complete anonymity. Our instant messaging looks and works just like Facebook messenger so is really easy to use. We only ever talk to one person at a time so that you get the volunteer’s full attention. This means we might not be able to answer your IM straight away but we have a virtual waiting room you can queue in until we get to you. IM is open 8pm-2am and then 6am-8pm on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.
No matter what you want to talk about, you can drop us an email and we will talk to you in complete confidence. Your email can be as short or as long as you want and our volunteers will take the time to write you a personal response. You can email once or start a chain of emails. When you email in, volunteers are unable to see your email address, keeping communication completely anonymous. You can email us 24/7 and we will reply within 48 hours.
